Redirect every WordPress 404 to the homepage

Redirect 404 errors applies one global rule: when WordPress identifies a frontend request as a 404, it sends a permanent 301 redirect to the homepage.

Enable it under Settings → POM Tweaks → SEO & LLMs → Redirections → Redirect 404 errors.

Destination

  • On a normal site, the destination is the WordPress home URL.
  • When the Polylang homepage helper is available, the destination is the homepage for the current language.

There are no per-URL rules, exclusions, alternative status codes, hit logs, or custom destinations in this module.

SEO decision

A blanket redirect can hide broken internal links and tell search engines that every missing URL has permanently moved to the homepage. Enable it only when that is the intended site-wide policy. A missing product, article, or malformed URL often has no meaningful homepage equivalent.

Read before activation

  1. Understand the single redirect rule.
  2. Verify and monitor 404 redirects.

Disabling the module restores normal WordPress 404 handling on later uncached requests.
