Customize user profiles and avatars
Site administrators can enable two independent modules under Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → User profiles: Custom profile images and Hide profile options. Enable only the module you need and select Save. Each module applies to the current site.
Choose a custom profile image
Enable Custom profile images, then:
- Open Users → Profile, or edit another user if your account has permission.
- Find Custom profile image and its Profile image URL field.
- Enter an absolute HTTP or HTTPS image URL. Accounts with permission to upload files can instead use Select image to choose an existing Media Library image or upload one.
- Check the preview and save the user profile.
- Open a screen that shows this user's WordPress avatar and confirm the image appears.
Existing custom profile images remain available. Users without a custom image retain their normal WordPress avatar. To remove an image, select Remove custom image and save the profile; this restores the normal avatar without deleting the image from the Media Library.
The image works with WordPress avatar HTML and URL functions, including user lists, author output, and comments that identify a WordPress user. Local Media Library images use the available thumbnail, medium, or full size. External images use the supplied URL. The image must be reachable by visitors; this module does not copy external images into the Media Library.
WordPress avatar visibility and requests that explicitly force a default avatar retain their normal behavior. A provider that has already supplied an avatar URL takes precedence. Themes or plugins that draw their own images without using WordPress avatar functions may need their own integration.
On multisite, a user's custom image is shared by sites that enable this module. Activation remains separate for each site. Image controls are available in site administration, not the Network Admin user editor. Disabling the module restores normal avatar behavior while retaining the user's custom image for later use.
Hide selected personal options
Enable Hide profile options and select Save to reveal Hide these profile options. Choose the rows to hide and save again:
| Option | Profile row hidden |
|---|---|
| Visual editor | The preference to disable the visual editor. |
| Administration color scheme | WordPress administration color choices. |
| Keyboard shortcuts | Keyboard shortcuts for comment moderation. |
| Frontend toolbar | The preference to show the toolbar when viewing the site. |
| Language | The user's preferred administration language. |
Selections apply to both your own profile and the site administration screen for editing other users. A row that WordPress does not provide for that user remains absent. No rows are selected by default.
Hiding a row preserves its saved preference when other profile fields are saved. It does not force the preference on or off and does not restrict user permissions. For example, hiding Frontend toolbar does not itself hide the toolbar; use administration bar controls for that behavior. Account identity, email, password, and other profile fields remain available.
Verify and reverse changes
- Reopen User profiles and confirm your selections persisted.
- Inspect your own profile and, if permitted, another user's profile.
- Save a harmless profile edit and confirm a previously chosen preference is retained after revealing its row again.
- Uncheck an individual option and save to reveal that row. Disable Hide profile options and save to restore all rows controlled by this module.
If the image does not appear, check the saved URL and whether the screen uses WordPress avatars. If Select image is absent, check the account's upload permission; users can still enter a valid URL on a profile they may edit. If a preference row remains absent after disabling the module, WordPress or another plugin may omit it for that user or site. Clear applicable caches before comparing results.
