Add an x-default language alternate

Default language adds an x-default entry to Polylang’s alternate-language attributes for translated singular content.

The setting appears under Settings → POM Tweaks → SEO & LLMs → Languages only when Polylang Pro is active.

Configure

  1. Confirm Polylang Pro languages and translations are complete.
  2. Enable Default language.
  3. Choose Default site language.
  4. Save.
  5. Open a translated post, page, or public custom post type.
  6. Inspect the document head and confirm one hreflang="x-default" points to that content’s translation in the chosen language.

If the current content has no translation in the selected language, the module adds no x-default URL.

Scope

The module extends Polylang’s existing hreflang output. It does not:

  • change the WordPress or Polylang default language;
  • redirect visitors;
  • translate content;
  • create missing alternate links;
  • change canonical URLs;
  • add an archive or homepage fallback when no translated post is available.

Chapter contents

  1. Choose the correct x-default destination.
