Configure the site RSS feed
Site administrators can manage feed availability, discovery links, featured images, and custom item content in one RSS feed module under Settings → POM Tweaks → Content → RSS feed. Settings apply to the current site.
Set up the module
- Open Settings → POM Tweaks → Content → RSS feed.
- Select Enable, then Save to initialize the module.
- Choose the options below and select Save again.
- Open a feed URL directly and check the result. Clear any page, feed, or CDN cache when changing feed availability or content.
All six options start off. Enabling the module alone does not close feeds or change their content.
Choose feed availability and discovery
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Disable all site feeds | Stops WordPress feed responses with HTTP 410 Gone and a short message. Covers RSS, RDF, Atom, comments, category, tag, author, search, and post type feeds, including query-string and permalink URLs. Removes the standard and extra discovery links too. |
| Remove standard feed links | Removes the main posts and comments feed discovery links from the page head. Direct feed URLs continue working. |
| Remove extra feed links | Removes WordPress discovery links for archives and individual-post comments. Direct feed URLs continue working. |
Disable all site feeds takes precedence over content options. Existing readers receive 410 rather than new feed items. Regular pages, REST responses, and sitemaps remain available. This controls feeds routed through WordPress; separately generated static files or feeds served directly by another application are outside its scope. Links manually added by a theme, menu, or content editor are not removed.
Customize feed items
Leave Disable all site feeds unchecked to use these options:
- Add featured images inserts the medium featured image before the item body. Items without a featured image keep their text. Images are included in full-content and summary feeds.
- Add a custom item header enables Item header content, an HTML editor for content before each item.
- Add a custom item footer enables Item footer content, an HTML editor for content after each item.
The order is custom header, featured image, original item content, then custom footer. Header and footer mean content around each post, not the XML channel header or document footer. Both work with WordPress full-text and summary feed settings under Settings → Reading.
Use safe HTML such as paragraphs, links, and images. Registered shortcodes are expanded for each post; choose shortcodes that produce self-contained HTML and do not require scripts or stylesheets. Unsafe markup is removed. Image layout can vary between feed readers. Comment feeds, password-protected item bodies, ordinary posts, and archive pages are not decorated.
Verify and reverse changes
- Check the main feed, such as
/feed/or/?feed=rss2, and a comments or category feed. - When feeds are disabled, verify the response status is 410. Removing links alone should leave direct feeds reachable.
- When publishing feeds, inspect an item with an image, one without an image, and both full and summary output. Header and footer should appear once in each item's content or summary.
- Inspect a normal page to confirm it has no feed-only additions.
To reopen feeds, uncheck Disable all site feeds and save. To restore every behavior controlled by this module, uncheck its top-level Enable and save. Your saved field values are retained for later use. These options do not delete posts, comments, attachments, or terms.
If changes are missing, clear caches and test signed out. If an image is absent, check that it is the post's featured image. If a shortcode remains visible, confirm the plugin that registers it is active; if it produces no content, check whether it supports feed requests. Another theme or plugin may independently remove feed links, close feeds, or add item content.
