Create a focused WordPress administration area
Use this workflow when editors need a quieter administration area without changing the responsibilities attached to their WordPress role. It combines appearance, toolbar, Dashboard, and editing-screen controls while keeping access decisions separate.
Before changing the interface
- Create or identify a representative non-administrator account.
- Record the menus, toolbar items, Dashboard widgets, notices, and editing panels that account currently sees.
- Confirm which controls are distracting and which are required for the person’s work.
- Keep a separate administrator session open for recovery.
Hiding a menu, toolbar node, notice, plugin row, or metabox does not revoke the capability behind it. Use the role and capability workflow when the requirement is to prevent an operation.
Build the focused experience
- Open Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Admin appearance and enable Admin appearance only if colors, spacing, toolbar sizing, or sidebar layout must change.
- Configure the named appearance fields before using Admin CSS. Test the expanded and folded sidebar after every width or navigation change.
- Open Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Admin bar, enable Hide toolbar elements, and discover a real example URL for each context. Save administration and frontend rules independently.
- Under Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Dashboard → Hide selected Dashboard widgets, discover the registered widgets and hide only those that all Dashboard users can do without. Configure layout and interaction under Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Dashboard → Dashboard widgets. Use Force one column only when every retained widget remains usable at that width.
- Under Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Metaboxes, enable the module, select a content type, and click Discover panels. Review a representative item, choose which panels to hide or remove, and click Save panel rules. These rules apply to all users on this site, including administrators.
- Use Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Branding for optional Help, Screen Options, footer, title, or Jetpack-promotion cleanup.
- Save and reload after each component instead of enabling the whole combination at once.
For notice cleanup, use Hide admin notices under Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Admin general settings. It suppresses the standard site notice area while retaining the WordPress update notice; other notice areas remain available. Turn it off when reviewing plugin maintenance messages.
Verify the complete journey
- Sign in as the representative editor and complete the normal workflow from Dashboard to editing and publishing.
- Inspect the toolbar in administration and on a public page; plugins can register different nodes in each context.
- Open the block editor, media modal, and any plugin screen used by the role.
- Repeat at a narrow viewport and with the sidebar folded.
- Sign in as an administrator and confirm that recovery and maintenance controls remain reachable.
If an item is merely hidden but a direct URL still works, the component is behaving as a presentation control. Apply a capability restriction only when that stronger boundary is intended.
