Choose order statuses by payment method
Payment method order statuses lets store managers choose a status for each payment method, with separate choices for offline checkout and confirmed payments. It works with POM Theme and WooCommerce order storage, including HPOS.
Configure payment rules
You need WooCommerce and permission to manage POM Tweaks settings. Configure the payment gateways in WooCommerce first.
- Open Settings → POM Tweaks → E-Commerce → General → Payment method order statuses.
- Select Enable, then use Add new under Payment method rules.
- Leave Enable this rule selected and choose a Payment method. Installed gateways are listed even when disabled in WooCommerce; adding a rule does not enable a gateway.
- Choose one or both status settings described below. Leave Keep WooCommerce default wherever no override is needed.
- Add other methods if needed and click Save.
- Reopen the rules and verify the saved choices. Exercise each method on a staging order before using the configuration on live orders.
Use one row per method. The first row for a method wins, including a disabled row; later duplicates are ignored. Disable a row to pause it without losing its choices, or disable the whole setting to restore normal gateway behavior. Existing order statuses are not rewritten when you save, reorder or disable rules.
Choose when the status changes
| Setting | When it applies | Available choices |
|---|---|---|
| When an offline payment is accepted | Native bank transfer (bacs), cheque and cash on delivery (cod) process an order with an amount due. Other gateways ignore this setting. |
Default, On hold, Processing, Completed, and registered custom statuses. |
| After payment confirmation | A gateway uses WooCommerce payment completion, including delayed server confirmations and zero-total orders. | Default, Processing, Completed, and registered custom statuses. |
Bank transfer and cheque normally place unpaid orders on hold. Cash on delivery normally uses Processing, or On hold when the order contains downloadable items. Setting an offline order to Processing or Completed can trigger stock updates, emails and download access before payment is received. Choose a status that matches your fulfillment policy.
Confirmed-payment rules do not verify or collect money. The gateway still owns payment verification. Leaving its choice at the default preserves WooCommerce's automatic Completed status for orders containing only virtual downloadable products. A gateway that changes statuses directly without using WooCommerce payment completion keeps its own behavior.
Pending payment, Failed, Cancelled, Refunded and checkout drafts are not offered as successful payment outcomes. On hold is available only for offline acceptance.
Custom statuses and compatibility
Custom statuses must be registered and available in WooCommerce. Enable Shipped order status to include Shipped. Custom statuses retain the stock, email, reporting, payment and download behavior supplied by WooCommerce and their providing extension; selecting one does not make it equivalent to Processing or Completed.
Unavailable saved gateways and statuses remain visible. If a selected status is unavailable or unsupported, the incoming WooCommerce status is retained. Restore the extension providing the status or choose an available one.
The setting uses the gateway's normal order workflow rather than changing the order again on the thank-you page. It supports classic checkout, POM Theme checkout and Checkout blocks when their gateway uses the corresponding native WooCommerce hooks. Administrator changes, cancellations and refunds remain under the normal order workflow. Repeated notifications follow WooCommerce's existing payment-completion rules.
Verify and troubleshoot
Place a staging order for a configured method and check its status and order notes in WooCommerce → Orders. For an online gateway, check both the unpaid order and its result after a successful payment confirmation. Also verify one unconfigured gateway and the store's emails, stock and download permissions.
If a rule does not apply, confirm that the setting and row are enabled, the correct payment method is selected, no earlier duplicate row takes precedence, and the selected status is available. For online payments, confirm that the gateway uses WooCommerce payment completion. An order without a payment method has no matching rule.
Disabling the setting affects subsequent payment processing. Review and change existing orders individually when a previously applied status needs correction.
