Configure the Classic editor

These seven independent controls customize TinyMCE in site administration. They are useful for editors who need consistent pasted text, tables, link attributes, or a named color palette. They do not change block-editor toolbars or add theme styles to published content.

Enable the controls you need

You need permission to manage site settings. The editing screen must use a TinyMCE visual editor; enable visual editing in your profile if necessary.

  1. Open Settings → POM Tweaks → Content → Classic editor.
  2. Enable the required controls from the table below and save.
  3. If you enable Custom color palette, open its settings, choose Palette mode, and add Colors with a Color and Color name for each item. Drag items to arrange their order, then save.
  4. Reload an editing screen. Expand its toolbar with Toolbar Toggle if some buttons are hidden. WordPress translates this label according to your account language.
Control Result
Paste as plain text Pasted text loses source formatting and embedded images. Native clipboard handling preserves text and paragraph breaks.
Table tools Adds table insertion and table, row, column, and cell operations. An existing table plugin can provide these tools.
Extra formatting buttons Adds font size, subscript, and superscript without repeating controls already present in another toolbar row.
Featured class button The .featured button toggles class="featured" on selected text using the editor’s normal formatting and undo behavior. The theme determines its appearance.
Larger color swatches Makes color palette cells 30 pixels wide and high and removes the custom color picker.
Link rel attributes Adds independent nofollow, noopener, and noreferrer choices to the advanced link dialog.
Custom color palette Appends named colors to the editor palette or replaces it with your colors. The palette expands to fit every item and the native “No color” choice.

An empty custom palette keeps the editor’s palette. Empty or invalid color values are ignored. Disabling a control does not remove formatting or attributes already saved in content.

  1. Select a link in the visual editor, click its edit button, and open Link options.
  2. Set Add rel="nofollow", Add rel="noopener", and Add rel="noreferrer" independently.
  3. Update the link, then save the post.

When Rank Math supplies the dialog, its existing nofollow checkbox is reused. Its sponsored, link title, and PRO schema controls remain available. Changing one relationship leaves the others, including existing ugc or external values, intact. New links start with clear relationship choices, including when moving between editors on the same screen.

In Text/Code mode, the link dialog inserts a new link with the chosen attributes. To edit an existing link’s attributes, use the visual editor or edit its HTML directly.

Rank Math’s site-wide external-link rules still apply when pages are rendered. Turning off nofollow for one stored link does not override an enabled global Rank Math rule. See Rank Math’s link controls for that distinction.

Verify and troubleshoot

  1. Paste formatted text into a draft and confirm the text and paragraph breaks remain without the source formatting.
  2. Insert a small table, add a row, and switch between Visual and Text/Code modes. Save and reopen the draft to check its structure.
  3. Select text, toggle .featured, and use Undo or toggle the selected format again. If the appearance does not change, check whether the theme styles .featured.
  4. Open the text and background color menus. Confirm the names and order match the palette and that a custom-only palette contains only the configured colors plus “No color”.
  5. Edit a link containing several relationship values. Change one checkbox and confirm the other values remain in its HTML. Repeat with Rank Math’s controls if installed.

If controls are missing, confirm that the tweak is enabled, reload the editor, expand the toolbar, and check for other plugins that replace TinyMCE or its link dialog. A block editor’s native link controls are outside this feature’s scope.

To reverse a change, disable that control and save. Existing post content stays as saved; use the editor or post revisions to reverse content changes.
