Rename media files safely

Media Renamer changes an image attachment’s main filename, generated sizes, WebP companions, attachment metadata, and detected references. It is a deliberate maintenance operation, not an automatic naming rule for future uploads.

Enable Media renamer under Settings → POM Tweaks → Media → Media library, then open Media → Media renamer.

What the tool provides

  • paginated search for image attachments;
  • a suggested base name derived from the attachment title;
  • optional attachment slug and title updates;
  • a required dry-run analysis before changes can be applied;
  • a report of affected files and detected references;
  • batched application with progress;
  • rollback data for the current batch.

Enter only the new base name—no folder and no extension. WordPress filename sanitization is applied, and the operation stops if a destination file already exists.

Risk boundary

The tool can update references it discovers in the current site and its POM Framework settings, including serialized values. It cannot guarantee knowledge of:

  • external websites and feeds;
  • CDN URLs or cached HTML;
  • hard-coded theme or plugin files;
  • remote applications;
  • custom storage that WordPress does not expose to the scan.

Old public URLs can therefore stop working even after a successful batch.

Safe order of work

  1. Review how references are detected and changed.
  2. Run a dry analysis and apply a controlled batch.
  3. Recover the current batch or restore a backup.

Disabling the module removes the administration tool but does not reverse applied renames.
