Build a bicycle configurator
Use this pattern for a frame, wheelset, drivetrain, cockpit, saddle, and optional accessories with exact compatibility and one assembled shipment.
Prerequisites
Publish frames and components as simple products or exact variations. Keep size, color, stock, weight, and dimensions current. Decide which compatibility combinations can be expressed as exact requires or excludes rules.
Configure the bicycle
- Create a Composite product and add required single-selection chapters for Frame, Wheelset, Drivetrain, Handlebar, and Saddle.
- Add optional multiple-selection chapters for Lights, Bags, Bottles, and Security.
- Use Specific products for technical components and category sources for universally compatible accessories.
- Choose Componentized for an expert audience or Stepped for a guided consumer flow.
- Add compatibility rules for exact frame, wheel, and drivetrain products or variations. Create rules in both directions when changing either endpoint must disable the other.
- Add a scenario that shows and requires Battery for an electric-frame choice, and hides it for standard frames.
- Use Calculated from components and add a fixed assembly Management fee.
- Choose Assembled: ship as the parent. Use parent dimensions for a known bicycle carton or the largest parent/component dimensions when that better matches fulfillment.
- Publish the product.

Expected result
The customer receives one validated build, incompatible components cannot reach the cart, an electric battery is required only for the relevant frame, and WooCommerce still reduces stock for every real component.
Verify and troubleshoot
Test both standard and electric branches, every compatibility direction, a sold-individually component, and stock held in another cart. Change the parent quantity and confirm aggregate demand is validated before checkout.
If the compatibility table becomes too large, publish separate Composite products for major bicycle families. The rules operate on exact products or variations rather than arbitrary attribute expressions.
