Guide editors with a title length counter

Use Title length guidance to show editors a character count and an advisory warning for selected content types. Site administrators configure it under Settings → POM Tweaks → Content → Editing. It works with the WordPress classic and block editors.

This is an editorial recommendation, not a hard publishing limit. Titles are never truncated. Imports, API requests, Quick Edit, and custom editors outside the native edit screen are not restricted.

Configure the guidance

  1. Enable Title length guidance and select Save.
  2. Enter a positive whole number in Recommended maximum title length. Empty or zero leaves the guidance inactive.
  3. Select the relevant Post types and save. The same maximum applies to every selected type.
  4. Reopen the tab to confirm the value and selections, then edit an item of a selected type.

The list includes content types with a visible administration interface and title support, excluding media. Previously saved types remain available when their provider is temporarily missing. New types start unselected. On multisite, configure each site separately.

What editors see

  • Classic editor: a live counter appears below the title. When the title is over the maximum, the counter shows a warning. Submitting the editing form shows an inline confirmation. Return to title cancels that save; Save anyway keeps the complete title.
  • Block editor: a counter appears in the post status area and a persistent warning appears above the editor while the title is too long. Editors can shorten it or save it unchanged. Shortening it to the maximum or below removes the warning.

The initial title is checked when the screen opens. Modern browsers count visible Unicode characters, including combined accents and joined emoji, as one character; browsers without Unicode segmentation fall back to counting Unicode code points. This differs from byte counts and is intended for editorial guidance.

Verify and reverse

  1. Enter a title below the maximum, then one above it, and check the counter and warning.
  2. In the classic editor, cancel a save and verify that the editor remains open; confirm a subsequent save to keep the longer title.
  3. In the block editor, shorten a title and verify that the warning disappears. Save a longer title and confirm it is preserved.
  4. Open an unselected content type and confirm no counter from this module appears.
  5. To stop guidance for one type, uncheck it and save. To stop it everywhere, disable the module and save, then reload open editors.

If no counter appears, confirm the type is selected, the maximum is positive, and the content type supports titles. Custom title interfaces need their own integration. No content restoration is necessary when disabling this setting.
