Replace translated administration text

Use Admin text replacements to adapt terminology in site administration. One control contains an ordered list of search-and-replace pairs, with no fixed ten-rule limit. You need permission to manage the site's settings.

Configure replacement rules

  1. Open Settings → POM Tweaks → White labelling → Branding.
  2. Enable Admin text replacements and click Save. The Replacement rules list appears after initialization.
  3. Click Add new and open the row. Enter the exact translated wording in Search and the new wording in Replace with.
  4. Add more rows as needed. Use Clone to copy a rule or Delete to remove it. Open all and Close all help review longer lists.
  5. Drag rows into the required order and click Save.
  6. Reload the affected administration screen, then reopen the settings to confirm the values and order persisted.

Matching and order

Rules are literal, case-sensitive substring replacements. They apply from top to bottom, so one rule can act on the result of an earlier rule. For example, Draft → Review followed by Review → Ready produces Ready. Reversing those rows produces Review.

  • A blank Search leaves that row inactive.
  • A blank Replace with removes matching text.
  • 0 is a valid search or replacement value.
  • Regular expressions and wildcard syntax are not supported.
  • Use a specific phrase to avoid replacing the same word in unrelated messages. Preserve formatting placeholders such as %s and %d when editing a translated message that contains them.

The list affects translated PHP strings, including contextual and plural translations, while site administration runs. It does not rewrite saved posts, translation files, public pages, Network Admin, or the network user dashboard. Text generated only in JavaScript, labels prepared before the module loads, and text that bypasses WordPress translation functions may remain unchanged. This is a terminology tool rather than a way to rename every registered content-type label.

Other translation filters can also change the result. Use WordPress display name for its specialized WordPress-name replacement; inspect shared phrases when both controls are active.

Verify or restore the original text

Choose a translated button or message on a familiar administration screen. Save one rule, reload that screen, and check the result. For ordered rules, reverse two related rows and verify that the output follows the new order.

To pause one rule, clear its Search and save. To pause the entire list, clear Enable for Admin text replacements and click Save. The saved rows remain available when you enable it again. Disabling this control does not change neighboring Branding controls.

If wording stays unchanged, check capitalization, the current user's administration language, the saved row order, and whether another rule already changed the phrase. If the text is outside the supported translation flow, use the originating plugin's own label setting.
