Prevent misleading fallback pages from being indexed
POM Translate falls back to source text when a target field has no usable translation. This keeps the site functional, but an accessible language route is not automatically ready for search indexing.
Why fallback needs a decision
A localized URL can have:
- a translated slug but source-language body text;
- a translated title with an untranslated SEO description;
- translated content with source-language taxonomy or navigation labels;
- alternate links that include the enabled locale.
POM Translate does not calculate a page-level completeness score for robots directives and does not add noindex automatically.
Choose one launch policy
For each important object:
- Complete and review all public fields before exposing the locale.
- Exclude the locale from that post or term until it is ready.
- Keep the route available but apply
noindexthrough the SEO plugin.
If using noindex, also review whether the page should remain in sitemaps or hreflang clusters. Contradictory signals make discovery harder to audit.
Check more than body content
Review:
- visible title, excerpt, body, and structured fields;
- localized slug and route;
- SEO title and description;
- taxonomy terms and breadcrumbs;
- canonical and hreflang links;
- menus and internal links;
- WooCommerce product and attribute text where applicable.
Exclusions
POM Translate removes locales excluded for the current context from its localized URL map before generating head alternates and Rank Math sitemap alternates. Exclusion is therefore the clearest way to avoid advertising a locale for that object.
Verify before indexing
Open the target URL while logged out, inspect its rendered text and metadata, then fetch it without browser-language redirects. Confirm the response, canonical, robots directive, alternate cluster, and sitemap presence all reflect the chosen policy.
Do not use a canonical pointing to the base language as a substitute for a deliberate fallback policy. A genuine translated page should normally be self-canonical.
