Monitor browser processing and the background queue
The Generate pending translations screen displays two different processing systems. Read their indicators separately.
Browser-driven generation
After selecting Process all or Translate pending only, the screen shows:
- a progress percentage;
- Processed work items;
- Total discovered work items;
- Translations created;
- a timestamped activity log.
For Process all, progress first describes posts, terms, and menu items in the discovery worklist. When that stage finishes, POM Translate counts every unresolved string-locale task, resets the bar to zero, and starts a second translation stage with its own Processed and Total values. Translate pending only skips discovery, performs the same count immediately, and starts with that translation total. The percentage remains below 100% until the saved job is complete.
The job checkpoint, progress statistics, and a bounded recent message history are stored on the server. Reloading the page rebuilds the visible log from that recent history; the saved job and its bounded WordPress cron continuation remain available.
When a stored-string batch fails, Batch details identifies its target locale, string IDs, source objects and fields, and payload size against the request limits. These details are shown with WordPress debug logging disabled. If only some rows remain pending, their identifiers are shown so you can find them in the relevant translation tab. See Troubleshoot machine translation.
Scheduled machine-translation queue
The same screen lists Strings already queued for machine translation. This persistent queue is populated by normal extraction when background machine translation is enabled.
The Machine Translation Status card reports:
- Strings in queue;
- Daily Word Quota usage;
- Strings Today;
- whether machine translation is paused after excessive errors.
WP-Cron handles a bounded scheduled run: at most 20 queued strings and one provider batch, then schedules another event when work remains. Process now works through the queue from the browser in groups of 10 until it finishes, is stopped, or cannot make progress.
Use Cancel scheduled translations only when you intend to clear the complete queue and its scheduled events. Stored source and pending translation rows remain.
