Translate menu item labels and descriptions

The text shown in navigation is not necessarily the title of its destination. WordPress stores a menu-specific Navigation Label, and POM Translate records that value as the menu item's label field. A non-empty menu-item description is recorded separately as description.

Edit the two fields independently

  1. Open Appearance → Menus and expand the item.
  2. Enter the definitive base-language Navigation Label.
  3. If the active theme displays menu descriptions, enter the base-language description.
  4. Select Save Menu.
  5. Open Translations → Translate contents.
  6. Choose the destination locale and filter All objects to Nav menu.
  7. Translate the label row and, when present, the description row.
  8. Save the translations.

At render time, the translated label replaces the item's displayed title. The translated description replaces the menu description without changing the item's destination.

Preserve supported inline markup

When a menu description contains supported inline HTML, POM Translate protects its structure during extraction. Translate only the readable text and leave protected placeholders intact. A malformed translated value is not a safe way to redesign the menu.

Respond to source changes

Saving the menu item again makes POM Translate reconcile its current fields:

  • a changed source label updates the collected source string;
  • a newly added description creates a description string;
  • clearing a previously populated field removes the obsolete menu string;
  • a globally excluded menu item has its stored menu strings removed.

After changing source wording, review the corresponding destination translations before publishing. The frontend uses source wording whenever the destination value is blank, so an old or missing translation can make one item visibly inconsistent with its neighbours.

Verify the right surface

Inspect the public menu rather than only the translation table. The theme decides whether descriptions are displayed, but POM Translate can translate them when WordPress supplies them. Also test compact, mobile, sticky, and footer presentations if they render the same WordPress menu through different templates.
