local_label: the language name in its own language

{%local_label%} displays the language name stored in the locale definition, written in that language. Typical output includes names such as English, Español, or Français.

Why it is the safest primary label

Visitors can identify their language without first understanding the site's current language. The value also has a dependable fallback: when a locale definition has no local label, POM Translate uses that locale's code.

Use it on its own for a clear text selector:

{%local_label%}

Or keep it as the textual name beside a decorative flag:

{%flag_html%} {%local_label%}

Distinguish regional variants

The language name alone may not distinguish two configured variants of the same language. If every relevant locale provides a country label, add local_country. Otherwise, use a reviewed custom_label that names each variant explicitly.

Verify the output

Save the template for the intended surface under Settings → POM Translate → Language switcher. Check that custom language definitions have an understandable local name, regional variants remain distinguishable, and the longest translated name fits the menu or floating control.
