Translate menus and links

POM Translate keeps one WordPress navigation menu and adapts it to the active locale. Each menu item can have three independent language decisions:

  • Visibility: choose the locales in which the item is displayed.
  • Wording: translate its navigation label and, when present, its description.
  • Destination: localize a WordPress post or term URL, or map a custom URL explicitly.

Changing one layer does not complete the others. A translated label can still point to the source destination, and a correctly localized destination can still show source-language wording.

Run a representative menu test

  1. Open Appearance → Menus and choose a menu used on the public site.
  2. Add or select one page item and one Custom Link item.
  3. Save the menu so POM Translate refreshes its source values.
  4. Open Translations → Translate contents, filter All objects to Nav menu, and translate the relevant label.
  5. If the custom destination differs by language, open Translations → Translate URLs → Custom links and save its mapped URL.
  6. Visit the public menu in the base locale and one additional locale.
  7. Check the visible item, its wording, its destination, and the resulting page separately.

Menu translations and custom URL mappings are applied when WordPress renders the menu. Saved changes also invalidate the affected menu cache.

Know which URL system applies

  • WordPress post, page, archive, and term links use localized routes and stored URL slugs.
  • External links, downloadable files, iframe sources, and explicit download links can be collected in Custom links.
  • A manually registered custom URL can also be mapped there.
  • A fragment such as #pricing stays attached when a custom destination replaces its source URL.
  • A language-switcher menu item is a special control and is not translated as an ordinary menu label or custom link.
