Work with software translations
Use Translations → Software translations for gettext strings supplied by WordPress core, a theme, or a plugin. This tab is available only to users allowed to manage software translations; by default, that means administrators with manage_options.
Load a catalog
- Choose the locale.
- Enter the software Text domain. Use
defaultfor WordPress core. - Select Load strings.
- Confirm the detected domain type, source file, translation file, and string count.
The editor can load existing PO or MO data and display recommended installation paths for the selected domain and locale.
Translate and export
Edit individual fields or, when machine translation is available, use Start batch translation. Batch translation fills empty fields and does not overwrite existing values. Stop ends the browser-driven batch after the current request.
These edits are not stored in POM Translate's database. Before leaving the page:
- select Download PO to retain an editable catalog;
- select Download MO to retain a compiled catalog;
- install the exported file in one of the locations shown by the screen.
WordPress loads the MO file on a later request. A PO file alone must be compiled before WordPress can use it.
Software catalogs are independent from Generate pending translations, the scheduled database-string queue, and registered strings under Other translations. See Software strings for the complete workflow.
