local_country: the country name in the local language

{%local_country%} returns the locale definition's country name written in that locale's language.

Use it to disambiguate

Country wording can distinguish regional variants that would otherwise share the same local language name:

{%local_label%} — {%local_country%}

This is most useful when the configured variants genuinely represent different regional audiences. A language is not always tied to one country, so keep the language name as the primary label.

Handle missing country names

The value is empty when the locale definition has no local country label. POM Translate removes the merge tag but does not remove adjacent parentheses, dashes, or spaces. There is no conditional merge-tag syntax.

Before using a decorated pattern, inspect every enabled locale. If any country name is absent, prefer {%local_label%} alone or provide complete custom_label values that express the intended distinction.

Compare the English alternative

Use country_label_english when the country should be written in English. Both country tags can be empty, so neither should be the sole text inside a selector link.

After saving, review regional variants together and confirm the country wording reflects the locale definition rather than assuming it from the visible flag.
