Retire an unused registered string
Retire a registered string when its public setting or integration output has been removed permanently. POM Translate does not provide a public per-string unregister helper or a source-row delete action in Other translations, so removal begins in the owning theme or plugin.
Supported retirement workflow
- Confirm that the value is no longer displayed in any active language.
- Remove the integration's call to
pom_translate_register_string()for that stable name. - Remove or replace calls that resolve the old source value.
- Deploy or activate the updated integration.
- Clear the relevant page and object caches.
- Visit the affected public routes in each language and confirm that the old text no longer appears.
Stopping registration prevents the retired value from being refreshed or used by the integration. It does not immediately remove its historical source record from the Translation Manager.
Remove locale translations when needed
The bulk action Delete selected translations removes the selected rows' translations for the locale currently being viewed. It does not delete the registered source itself.
Use it only after confirming the target locale and selected rows:
- Go to Translations → Other translations.
- Choose the locale whose saved values you want to remove.
- Find the retired registered name.
- Select the row.
- Choose Delete selected translations and apply the action.
- Repeat deliberately for another locale only when required.
Do not use a broad maintenance cleanup merely to curate this list. Source cleanup tools are intended for content records and can affect more than one translation surface.
If the text still appears
The original may still be:
- registered by another active integration;
- hard-coded as a gettext message;
- saved in a post, widget, menu, or separate theme option;
- present in a page or persistent cache.
Search by the visible copy and inspect the registered name before deleting locale values. Similar text can have independent owners.
Expected result
The retired integration no longer registers or renders the value. Historical registry information may remain visible, while any explicitly deleted locale translations are removed only for the locales you selected.
