Disable translation for a taxonomy
An optional classification can leave the multilingual editorial workflow without being deleted from WordPress. This is useful when its labels are internal, its public filter has been withdrawn, or the site will use source-language terms everywhere.
The core category and post_tag taxonomies are excluded from this procedure. POM Translate treats both as permanent, so their switches do not appear in the optional list.
Audit term destinations
Map the classification beyond its edit screen. A term can be exposed by archive headings, faceted search, breadcrumbs, post cards, navigation menus, canonicals, alternate-language links, and XML sitemaps.
Record the localized archive addresses before withdrawal. Those addresses may have inbound links or search history even when editors no longer need the term-name translations.
Withdraw the optional classification
- Preserve the relevant translations and the current route list.
- Open Settings → POM Translate → Content types.
- In Taxonomies available for translation, clear Enable translations for this taxonomy beside the intended slug.
- Save, refresh, and confirm the option remains clear.
- Change a harmless source term, save it, and verify that its translation rows are no longer refreshed.
- Check the public filter or archive in each configured locale.
POM Translate rejects later term-save events for that classification before name and description extraction. The unchecked option therefore leaves earlier translation records untouched; it is not a purge operation.
Handle paths independently
Term text and routing use different dictionaries. Removing the classification from content extraction does not remove localized slugs, redirect old archives, or change the taxonomy base. Complete those URL decisions separately.
Bring it back
Restore the option, then update the terms that should return to translators. Their current names and non-empty descriptions are collected on those saves, and any missing locale slug begins from the source slug.
