Translate excerpts

POM Translate extracts a post excerpt only when the post type’s Excerpt part is enabled and the canonical post_excerpt contains text.

An automatically generated WordPress excerpt is not stored as a separate source row. To control its target wording, provide a manual excerpt on the source object.

Prepare a manual excerpt

  1. Open the source post or custom object.
  2. enter the intended source summary in WordPress’s excerpt field;
  3. ensure the object is published or private;
  4. open Settings → POM Translate → Content types;
  5. confirm Excerpt is enabled for that post type;
  6. save the source object.

The translation table should now include a row whose field context resolves to the post excerpt.

Translate the summary

Open the object’s Manage translations link or filter Translations → Translate contents by its Object ID.

Write the excerpt for its real purpose rather than translating word for word. It may need to:

  • fit an archive card;
  • summarize the article accurately;
  • end cleanly without automatic truncation;
  • preserve a call to action;
  • avoid repeating the title.

Select Save translations and inspect the localized archive.

Understand empty values

If the target excerpt is empty, POM Translate returns the source excerpt. It does not generate a target-language summary from the translated body.

If the source excerpt itself is empty, POM Translate has no excerpt row to translate. WordPress or the theme may still generate a display excerpt from body content; that behavior belongs to the theme and should be tested separately.

Keep excerpt HTML conservative

Manual translations are sanitized when saved. Excerpts are usually short plain text; avoid adding structural markup simply because the editor accepts it.

If protected tokens appear, retain them exactly. Their presence means the source value contains structure that POM Translate must restore.

Source edits reset the affected row

Changing the canonical manual excerpt and saving the post updates its source record. The prior target values for that changed row are removed unless an exact matching source translation can be reused.

This behavior prevents an old summary from being presented as the translation of newly edited source copy.

Verify every excerpt surface

Inspect:

  • the main posts archive;
  • category and tag archives;
  • search results;
  • related-content cards;
  • featured-content components;
  • social metadata if it derives from the excerpt;
  • character limits and wrapping on small screens.

Also confirm that the visible summary is the manual excerpt rather than a theme-generated body extract. If it is generated from body content, review Translate body content.
