Prompt recipes for better writing
Worked prompts for the available writing tools and common page-copy tasks. Each is short on purpose: the long-form builder's own help tip warns that extending a prompt beyond the length of its supplied example is unnecessary and tends to produce worse results.
For the underlying principles rather than recipes, see Prompting guides.
Long-form articles
Comparison article
Article comparing the two common approaches to <task> for <audience>. Cover cost, time, and what goes wrong with each. Reader is deciding between them, not learning what they are. No history section.
Buyer's guide
Buying guide for <product category> aimed at <buyer>. Must cover: what to check before buying, the three most common mistakes, and how to compare suppliers. Do not compare named competitors.
Explainer for a non-specialist
Explain <concept> to <audience> who has heard the term but does not know what it involves. Practical consequences, not theory. Prefer fewer, deeper sections.
Post-mortem or case-style article
Article about how <type of business> solved <problem>. Structure it as a problem, what was tried, what worked, and what we would do differently. Concrete throughout.
Marketing pages
Campaign landing page
Landing page for an ads campaign selling <offer> to <audience>. The single decision we want is <action>. Lead with the outcome, not the features. No urgency or scarcity language.
Service page
Service page for <service>. Reader has a problem and is comparing providers. Cover what is included, what is not included, how the process works, and who it is not suitable for.
Product page
Product page for <product>. Reader already knows the category. Emphasise <differentiator>. Include honest limitations.
Use these prompts when requesting a page in the site-wide copy generator or when drafting individual sections with the paragraph assistant. The dedicated landing page builder is currently unavailable.
Whole-site copy
The site-wide tool takes Additional instructions alongside the page selection. Use them for the things that apply to every page:
Business is <what it is>. Positioning is <positioning>. Never claim <claim we cannot make>. Always refer to customers as <term>. Do not invent company history, size or founding date.
That last clause is worth including every time. About and Services pages are where generated copy most often invents a track record.
Then differentiate the pages in their individual descriptions, or the overview and the "single" pages will repeat each other. See Generate copy for a complete website.
Paragraph assistant
Recipes are grouped by the mode they need.
Continue mode
Now explain the two options and when each applies.
Cover what this does not do, honestly.
Move from the technical explanation to what the reader should do next.
Rewrite mode
Remove the marketing language and state plainly what this does. Keep every figure and product name.
Lead with the conclusion, then the supporting detail.
Split the long sentences up. Do not add or remove information.
Replace mode
Write an introduction that opens with the reader's problem and does not restate the title.
The mode changes what these mean. See Write and revise a paragraph in the visual editor.
Elements worth including
Most weak prompts are missing one of these:
| Element | Example |
|---|---|
| The reader's starting point | has already decided to buy and is comparing options |
| The decision you want | the single action is to request a quote |
| Must-cover points | must cover cost, timescale, and what goes wrong |
| Exclusions | no history section, no named competitors |
| Register | the way a specialist explains to a colleague |
Three of the five is usually enough.
Elements worth leaving out
- Your tone and audience, if they are already in the business description. Restating them wastes input and can conflict. See Provide useful business context.
- Instructions about SEO keyword density.
- Long background essays about the company.
- Formatting demands the tool cannot honour, such as specific block types.
Saving what works
When a prompt produces a good result, save it under Settings → POM AI → Prompt templates with the contexts where it applies. Templates append to the prompt field, so a saved skeleton can be applied and then adapted. See Prompt templates.
