An item is in the wrong category

A dish showing under the wrong section is usually one of three things: it was assigned there, it was assigned there automatically, or it is assigned to more than one category at once.

Check what it is actually assigned to

Open the item and look at the category checklist in the side column. That checklist is the truth; the position in the public menu is only a consequence of it.

Two findings matter:

  • More than one category ticked. The item then belongs to each of them and can be rendered in each. If that is not intended, untick the extras.
  • Nothing ticked. The item has no category. It will appear in Uncategorized Items on the list screen and stays hidden from guests.

Why an item can land in a category you never chose

Fenómenus assigns a category automatically in one specific situation: when a menu item is published without any category.

  • If the menu type already has categories, the item is assigned to the first available one.
  • If the menu type has no categories at all, a category named after the menu type is created and the item is put in it.

This is a safety net so nothing published is invisible, not a guess at where the dish belongs. If you see a category that looks like the name of the menu type itself, it was almost certainly created this way.

Wine list items are excluded from this behavior.

Fix one item

From the item screen:

  1. Untick the wrong category.
  2. Tick the right one.
  3. Update the item.

From All items, without opening the item:

  1. Find the row.
  2. Change its category from the row control.
  3. Confirm it moves under the correct heading.

Fix many items

If a whole batch landed in the wrong place:

  • Use the category filter on All items to isolate the wrong category, then move the rows one by one.
  • If the items came from a spreadsheet import, remember that an import applies one category to the whole batch, chosen in Assign category before saving. Re-importing the same titles with the correct category selected will move them, because rows are matched by exact title.

Re-importing also moves the matched items to the end of the menu order, so plan to re-check the order afterwards. See Update items in bulk.

After the fix

  1. Confirm the item now sits under the right heading on All items.
  2. Confirm its position within the section; moving an item between categories does not preserve a meaningful position in the new one.
  3. Check the public menu signed out.
  4. On a multilingual site, confirm the translated item moved as well. Category assignments are kept aligned across translations when the item is saved from the item screen.

The category itself may be the problem

If several items look misplaced at once, look at the category tree instead of the items. On All categories, a category dragged under the wrong parent moves everything it contains. Fix the tree, select Save changes, and the items follow.
