Create a QR code for a category
A category code opens one section of a menu directly. It is the most precise code the generator produces — and the most fragile, because a category's address depends on its name.
When to use it
- A counter display for one section: Pintxos, Sweet wines, Gin and tonics.
- A poster promoting a specific part of the offer.
- A menu type without its own published archive, where a category archive is the public menu.
- A table code for a restaurant whose whole card lives in one section.
Generate it
- Open QR generator.
- Untick Home Page if you do not need it in this batch.
- Find the category in the list. Categories are listed after the menu archives, each with the menu it belongs to shown beside it.
- Tick it.
- Select Generate Codes.
- Download the SVG for print.
The list shows every category of every menu type, so read the menu name beside a category before ticking it — several menus can have a section called Starters.
When a category archive is the menu
On many sites a menu type does not publish an archive of its own, and its category archives are what guests read. In that case a category code is not a niche tool: it is the normal way to link the menu.
If a menu type is missing from the archive list in the generator, generate for its main category instead.
The fragility to plan around
A category's address is derived from the category. Renaming or deleting it changes or removes that address, and every printed code pointing at it stops working.
That has two practical consequences:
- Rename freely before printing, never after. Settle the category names before any code goes to a printer.
- Do not point table codes at seasonal categories. A Summer menu category that disappears in October takes its printed codes with it.
For anything expensive to reprint, point at a menu archive or the home page instead.
Verify the destination first
Open the category archive in a private window and check:
- the section is complete and published;
- the navigation lets a guest reach the rest of the menu, and the contact dock lets them reach other menus;
- there is enough content to justify a dedicated code.
A code that opens a section with three items reads as a mistake.
Categories in several languages
On a multilingual site, each language has its own category and therefore its own address. The generator produces one code per language, in labelled groups.
Download from the correct group and name the file with its language before sending anything to print.
Before printing
- [ ] The category name is final and will not be renamed.
- [ ] The section is complete and published.
- [ ] The destination was opened and verified signed out.
- [ ] The correct language group was downloaded.
- [ ] SVG for print.
- [ ] A printed proof was scanned at the table.
- [ ] The file is stored with its destination and date in the name, for reprints.
