Remove allergens

There are two different removals, and confusing them is how allergen data goes wrong: removing an allergen from a dish, and removing an allergen from the library.

Remove an allergen from one dish

  1. Open the item from All items.
  2. In the Allergens panel, untick the allergen.
  3. Select Update.

The change applies to the item and all of its translations, so the dish stops declaring that allergen in every language at once.

Do this only when the recipe actually changed, or when the original tagging was wrong. Untagging to make a dish survive a guest's filter is not a menu decision — it is a safety failure.

Remove an allergen from the library

  1. Open Settings → Restaurant settings → Content settings → Allergens.
  2. Select the remove control on that allergen's row.
  3. Select Save Allergens.

This removes it everywhere: from the filter, from the information panel, from the icons beside dishes, and from every item that carried it. Dishes are not deleted or otherwise changed — they simply no longer declare that allergen.

Think of it as retiring a category of information, not as editing one dish.

Before removing from the library

Ask three questions:

  1. Is anything tagged with it? If dishes carry it, removing it silently reduces what guests are told.
  2. Is it a legally declarable allergen where you operate? Removing one of those from the library is not a formatting decision.
  3. Would renaming solve the problem instead? Renaming keeps every assignment intact and is usually what is really wanted — see Manage the allergen library.

When a recipe changes

A recipe change is an allergen change, and it usually cuts both ways:

  1. Untick what is no longer in the dish.
  2. Tick what is now in it.
  3. Update the description if the ingredients are listed there.
  4. Update the item on every menu type where the dish appears — a dish on both the bar menu and the à la carte menu is two records.
  5. Regenerate any PDF that prints allergens.

The last step is the one that is forgotten. A printed menu keeps declaring the old allergens until it is rebuilt.

Restore Defaults is not a removal tool

Restore Defaults replaces the entire library with the built-in seventeen and removes the existing allergens. It asks for confirmation, and the confirmation says exactly that.

It is a reset, not a way to remove one entry. Use the row's remove control for a single allergen.

Verifying a removal

  1. Reload the allergens screen and confirm the list is what you expect.
  2. Open a menu signed out and check the filter tags.
  3. Open a dish that carried the allergen and confirm the icon is gone.
  4. Open the allergen information panel and confirm the entry is gone.
  5. Regenerate PDFs.

Keep a record

There is no history of allergen changes inside the product, and menu items keep no revisions. If your operation needs an audit trail — and for allergen data it probably does — keep it outside the product: a dated note of what changed, on which dish, decided by whom.
