Create a QR code for an item
The generator's checklist covers the home page, menu archives and category archives. Individual dishes are not in that list, and this page explains what to do instead.
Why items are not listed
Fenómenus is built around menus, not around individual dish pages. A guest scanning a code expects to arrive at something they can read and order from — a menu or a section — not at a single dish with no context, no navigation to its neighbours and no prices to compare against.
The generator therefore offers the destinations that work as a landing point.
What to do instead
1. Point at the item's section. In almost every real case — a poster for the house specialty, a card on a table promoting a dish — the useful destination is the category that dish belongs to. The guest arrives in context and can order the dish or something next to it.
See Create a QR code for a category.
2. Use the Custom URL field, if the dish genuinely has its own public address on your site. Open it in a private browser window first, copy the address exactly, and paste it into Custom URL.
If the address does not open cleanly for a signed-out visitor, it is not a destination to print.
3. Point at a page you control. For a campaign around one dish — a tasting, a limited edition, a collaboration — build a page for it and generate a custom-URL code for that page. You then own the content, and you can change it without reprinting.
Featured items are the supported way to highlight a dish
Inside a menu, the built-in way to draw attention to a dish is the featured mark, not a separate code. It renders in the layouts and in the PDF, and its public label is yours to name — House specialty, Chef's choice.
Combine the two: a category code on the table, and the dish featured within that section.
If you still want a single-dish code
Then treat it as the least durable code on the site:
- verify it in a private window before generating;
- never print it on anything expensive;
- expect it to break if the dish is renamed, retired or restructured;
- prefer a short seasonal print run over laminated permanent material.
Before printing anything
- [ ] The destination opens for a signed-out visitor.
- [ ] It is readable on a phone without extra navigation.
- [ ] A guest arriving there can reach the rest of the menu.
- [ ] The address will still exist for as long as the print run lasts.
If any of those is doubtful, point at the category instead.
