Reorder categories

The order of the sections is the shape of the menu. On All categories you arrange it by dragging, and — unlike the item list — nothing is applied until you save.

How the screen behaves

Action Effect
Drag a category up or down Changes its position among its siblings
Drag a category sideways Nests it under the category above, or promotes it back
Any change Shows You have unsaved changes and enables Save changes
Save changes Applies the whole arrangement and confirms All changes saved

Changes are staged deliberately: a menu restructure is reviewed as a whole and applied in one step, rather than half-applied while you are still thinking.

Reorder

  1. Open All categories under the menu type.
  2. Drag the categories into the order guests should read.
  3. Drag sideways to nest or promote where needed.
  4. Check the whole tree before saving.
  5. Select Save changes and wait for the confirmation.
  6. Check the public menu signed out.

If you leave the screen without saving, the arrangement is discarded. The unsaved-changes message is the warning to watch for.

Nesting depth

One level only — parents and their children. A category dragged deeper will not produce a third level, so a section that "will not stay" where you dropped it is usually a depth that is not supported.

Order the way service happens

The sequence that works is the sequence of the meal:

To share
Starters
From the grill
Fish
Rice
Desserts

Not alphabetical, not by price, and not by how the kitchen sections are organized. Put the section you most want ordered near the top: on a phone, the first two sections get most of the attention.

What the order affects

  • The public archive, in every layout.
  • The sticky category navigation, including which section is the default landing point.
  • The generated PDF, which prints the categories in this order.
  • The category filter on All items.

One arrangement, four outputs — except a PDF already generated, which must be rebuilt.

Flat and nested navigation

How the navigation renders the tree is a per-menu-type setting, not a property of the categories: Use flat category navigation for … archive under Content settings → Content settings. Wine lists default to flat, the other types to nested.

So if a nested tree is rendering as a flat list, check that setting before rebuilding the tree.

Multilingual sites

The order is a property of the categories, and translated categories follow the structure of the source. Translate the names, keep one arrangement.

When the order does not stick

  1. Confirm you selected Save changes and saw All changes saved.
  2. Confirm you did not add or delete a category with an unsaved reorder pending — the screen asks you to save first for exactly this reason.
  3. Reload the screen and read the tree back.
  4. If the admin tree is right and the public menu is old, purge the site's page cache or CDN.
