Move items between categories
An item's category decides which section of the menu it appears in. Moving one is a two-second change, but there are three ways to do it and they suit different situations.
Move one item from the list
- Open All items under the menu type.
- Find the row — the search box is quickest.
- Change its category from the row control.
- Confirm the item now appears under the new heading.
- Drag it to its position within that section; a moved item does not arrive in a meaningful place.
This is the fastest method and the right one during service.
Move one item from its own screen
Open the item and use the category checklist in the side column. Untick the old category, tick the new one, and update.
Use this when you are already editing the item, or when the item should belong to more than one section — the checklist allows several, the row control expresses one.
Be deliberate about multiple categories. An item in two sections is rendered in both, which is occasionally what you want (a dish that is both a starter and a sharing plate) and usually a mistake.
Move a whole batch
There is no multi-select move. For a large regrouping there are two practical approaches:
Filter and repeat. Filter All items by the old category and change each row. Fast enough for a dozen items and completely predictable.
Re-import. If the items came from a spreadsheet, paste the same titles again with the correct category chosen in Assign category. Rows are matched by exact title, so matched items are reassigned rather than duplicated.
Re-importing also moves the matched items to the end of the menu order, so plan to re-order afterwards. See Update items in bulk.
Move the section instead of the items
If every item in a section is moving together, do not touch the items at all. On All categories, drag the category to its new position — or under a new parent — and select Save changes. Everything it contains follows.
This is the right tool for restructuring a menu, and it is far safer than reassigning items one by one.
What moving does not change
- The item's status, prices, allergens, photos and text are untouched.
- Translations follow: category assignments are kept aligned across an item's translations when it is saved from the item screen.
- Printed QR codes are unaffected unless they pointed at the specific category the item left.
- A generated PDF still shows the old arrangement until it is regenerated.
After the move
- Confirm the item sits under the correct heading on All items.
- Set its position within the new section.
- Confirm the old section still reads correctly without it — a section left with one item may not deserve to be a section.
- Check the public menu signed out.
- On a multilingual site, confirm the translated item appears in the translated section.
Items with no category at all
An item with no category is not moved — it is unassigned, and guests cannot see it. It appears in the Uncategorized Items panel at the top of All items, where it can be assigned directly. See Uncategorized items.
