A menu does not appear

Use this article when something you expect on the public site is not there: a whole menu, a section inside it, or one dish. Work down the list — each check is cheaper than the one after it, and the first four resolve most cases.

First, name what is missing

The cause is different for each of these, so decide before you start:

  • One item is missing from a section that otherwise works.
  • One section is missing from a menu that otherwise works.
  • A whole menu is missing from the site.
  • Everything is missing, including the home page.

One item is missing

  1. Check its status. Open All items for that menu type and set the status filter to Draft. An item on Draft is invisible to guests by design.
  2. Check its category. Look at the Uncategorized Items panel at the top of the list. Items with no category are not shown to guests, and the panel says so.
  3. Check you are looking at the right menu type. A dessert added to the à la carte menu will not appear on the desserts menu.
  4. Check the language. On a multilingual site, an item exists per language. If the translation was never created, that language has nothing to show.
  5. Reload signed out. If the item appears in a private window but not in your normal browser, you were looking at a cached page.

One section is missing

A category is only rendered when it has content to render.

  1. Confirm the category has at least one Published item.
  2. Confirm those items are assigned to that exact category and not to a sibling.
  3. On All categories, confirm the category still exists and was saved — a category added but never saved with Save changes does not exist yet.
  4. If the section is a child category, confirm its parent is present too. Nesting is limited to one level; a category dragged deeper than that will not behave as expected.

A whole menu is missing

  1. Open Settings → Restaurant settings → Content settings → Content types and confirm the menu type is marked as active. A type that was never enabled has no admin menu and no public archive.
  2. Confirm the menu type has published items in at least one category. An enabled but empty menu type has nothing to show.
  3. Confirm the archive is reachable at its own address, not only through the navigation. If the address works but no link reaches it, the problem is the navigation, not the menu.
  4. Check the contact dock configuration for the menu the guest starts from: Content settings → Content settings, then the Contact dock links for that archive. A menu that is not ticked there will not be linked, even though it exists.

Everything is missing

This is rarely a menu problem.

  1. Open the site home page directly. If it fails too, the issue is the site, not Fenómenus.
  2. Check whether the setup assistant was ever completed. Until it is, an administration notice says the setup wizard has not been completed, and the structure the menus depend on may not exist.
  3. Check whether you are on the right site. On a network of restaurants, each site has its own menus.

When the admin screen is the thing that is missing

If a menu type is absent from the WordPress sidebar rather than from the public site:

  • the menu type may not be enabled;
  • your account may have the Basic profile, which removes Settings, Plugins, Users, Tools and other entries;
  • All categories specifically requires permission to manage categories, so it can be missing while All items is present.

See Access your Fenómenus account for the capability map.

Still missing

Collect this before asking for help: the exact public URL, whether the item is Published, which category it is in, which language you are testing, and whether it appears in a private window. That list is enough to identify the layer, and it is described in Safe information to send with a support request.
