The "go back to course" label

Every lesson page shows a link back to the course landing page. Its wording is set per course.

Where

Course settings → Lessons → "Go back to course" text.

The default is ← Go back to course intro.

In the course sidebar, above the outline, on lesson pages only. The course page itself does not show it, because that is where it points.

It is one of the two ways a student returns to the course overview — the other being the course title shown above each lesson.

Why change it

The default describes the mechanism. Better wording describes the destination:

Wording Reads as
← Go back to course intro The default; slightly technical
← Course overview Neutral and clear
← Back to the course Conversational
← All lessons Accurate when the course page is mostly the outline
← Back to Course name Specific, but must be edited per course

Keep the arrow, or an equivalent visual cue. It is what tells students at a glance that the link goes backwards.

Keep it consistent

It is a per-course field, so each course can differ — which is almost never what you want. A student taking two of your courses should meet the same wording in both.

Decide the wording once and apply it to every course. If you maintain a template course as a draft, put it there.

Multilingual sites

The field belongs to the course, so a translated course carries its own label. Set it as part of translating the course.

What it is not

  • It is not a browser back button. It always goes to the course landing page, wherever the student came from.
  • It is not the previous-lesson link. Previous and next navigation are separate, and controlled by the layout settings.

Both are useful, and students use them differently: previous/next to move through the material, the back link to see where they are in the whole course.

Verify

  1. Set the label and update the course.
  2. Open a lesson as a student with access.
  3. Confirm the link appears above the outline with your wording.
  4. Select it and confirm it opens the course landing page.
  5. Confirm it does not appear on the course page itself.
  6. Check it on a phone, where the sidebar stacks.
