The login form on a course
A course can show a sign-in form above its content, so a student who is simply not signed in can fix that without leaving the page.
Where
Course settings → Configuration → Add a login form on top — If enabled, a login form will be displayed on top of the course's single page.
The form appears on the course page and on the lessons of that course.
When to enable it
- The course requires login. Without a form, a signed-out visitor reads a message and has nowhere to go.
- The course is paid or rule-gated, and returning students who already have access simply need to sign in.
- The site has no visible sign-in link in its navigation.
Whenever a gate can be resolved by signing in, the form belongs on the page.
When to leave it off
- Open courses, where nobody needs to sign in.
- Sites where signing in happens elsewhere and a second form is confusing.
- Courses reached only from inside an account area, where the student is already signed in.
What the form says
Three texts, set once for the whole site under Settings → POM LMS → Account → My account settings:
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Login form prepend | The line above the form |
| Login error message | What a failed sign-in says |
| Content if logged in | What an already signed-in student reads instead of the form |
Because they are site-wide, write them to work on every course.
The prepend line
The default explains that access requires purchasing the training, and that anyone who already has it should sign in.
Rewrite it for your site. It is the first thing a blocked visitor reads, and it should cover both cases: Already enrolled? Sign in. Not yet? See the options below.
The logged-in content
Shown when the visitor is already signed in, so the form is not offered pointlessly. The default greets the student by name, shows the account email, and offers links to sign out and to the account area.
It accepts merge tags for the student's first name, last name and email, and for the sign-out and account links, so one text serves every student.
Use it to be useful rather than decorative — a signed-in student reading this on a course they cannot open needs to know which account they are using, which is exactly what the default tells them.
The form is not the gate
Showing the form does not grant anything. Signing in only helps when being signed in is what the course requires — or when the student's account already satisfies the rule or holds the purchase.
A student who signs in and still cannot get in should then read the no-access message, which is why both need to be written.
Verify
- Enable the setting and update the course.
- Open the course in a private window and confirm the form appears with your prepend text.
- Sign in from it and confirm you land back with access resolved correctly.
- Reload while signed in and confirm the logged-in content appears instead of the form.
- Enter a wrong password once and confirm the error message reads sensibly.
- Confirm the form also appears on a lesson of that course.
