Resume a course

How a student gets back into a course they started days ago.

The route back

My courses in the account area. Every accessible course is listed with its percentage and an Access the course action.

That is the entry point to give students in any message you send: not a lesson URL, which changes if you restructure the course, but the account area.

What they find

The course page, with the outline in the sidebar. Completed lessons carry a ticked checkbox; the rest are unticked. The progress bar shows how far they are.

The student decides where to resume. Nothing jumps them to a specific lesson.

There is no "continue" button

Worth stating plainly, because students ask for it: POM LMS does not record which lesson was last opened, and there is no automatic resume.

What the student has instead is the outline, where the last ticked lesson is visible at a glance. In a well-structured course with sections and short lesson titles, that is enough. In a flat course of forty identically named lessons, it is not — which is an argument for sections.

Make the outline scannable

Since the outline is the resume mechanism, it has to work at a glance:

  • Give every lesson a section, so the student navigates by chapter rather than by scrolling.
  • Use distinct lesson titles. "Part 3" tells a returning student nothing.
  • Set estimated times, so a student with ten minutes can pick a lesson that fits.
  • Keep sections to a handful of lessons, so the accordion is usable.

Bookmarks

Lesson URLs are permanent and shareable, so a student can bookmark a lesson directly.

Two caveats to mention if you recommend it:

  • A bookmarked lesson still checks access on every visit; nothing is bypassed.
  • Changing the lesson slug — or the course and lesson URL structure — breaks the bookmark. See Course URL structure.

Progress survives interruptions

A student who is away for months returns to the same percentage. Completion never expires or resets.

If their access lapsed while they were away — a subscription ended, a rule stopped matching — the course disappears from My courses and the lessons close, but their record is intact and returns with their access.

No reminders

POM LMS sends no email, ever: no "you haven't finished", no nudge, no deadline. If you want students brought back, that campaign lives in your mailing tool.

Verify

  1. As a test student, complete part of a course.
  2. Sign out, then sign back in.
  3. Open My courses and confirm the percentage is unchanged.
  4. Open the course and confirm the completed lessons are still ticked.
  5. Confirm the outline makes the next lesson obvious.
