Progress is not updating
The percentage will not move, or will not reach 100%.
1. Which completion mode is the site in?
Settings → POM LMS → Account → Lessons manual check.
| Mode | Progress advances when |
|---|---|
| Off (default) | The student opens a lesson |
| On | The student ticks the lesson in the outline |
In manual mode, a student who never ticks anything sits at 0% forever, and reports it as broken. Nothing tells them the mode — you have to.
Put a line in the course description:
Tick each lesson in the outline when you finish it — that is how your progress is tracked.
2. Is the student signed in?
Progress belongs to accounts. An anonymous visitor reading a preview accumulates nothing, and the bar reads zero.
If the student is signed in with a different account from the one they usually use, they will see that account's progress — which is often zero.
3. The course will not reach 100%
This is the classic case, and it has one cause almost every time.
The percentage counts every lesson attached to the course, including lessons with no section. Sectionless lessons do not appear in the outline, so a student can complete everything they can see and stop short.
Find them:
- Open Lessons and filter by the course.
- Read the Section column.
- Every dash is a counted-but-invisible lesson.
Fix by assigning a section, or by detaching the lesson from the course if it does not belong there.
4. The percentage went down
Expected, if you added a lesson. The denominator is the course's current lesson count, so adding a lesson lowers everyone's percentage and removing one raises it.
Nothing is lost — their completed lessons are unchanged. But a percentage that drops silently reads as a bug, so announce additions to a live course.
5. It advances when it should not
Automatic mode marks a lesson complete when the student opens it, including a lesson they open and immediately leave.
If you want the percentage to mean "I did this work", switch to manual mode — and tell students, because the change is invisible.
6. It moved for one student and not another
Progress is per student and per course. Two students in the same course have independent records, and there is no way for an editor to adjust either.
If one is stuck, check the account first: signed in? the right account? the same course?
7. Nothing at all happens when a lesson is ticked
Check in a private window with a student account, and with browser extensions disabled. A checkbox that will not respond for one student and works for everyone else is usually something in their browser.
Also confirm the lesson is one they can access — the checkbox is disabled on lessons the student cannot open.
What progress does not do
- It does not unlock anything. There is no sequential gating.
- It does not notify anyone at any percentage.
- It does not produce a certificate at 100%.
- It does not expire, and it is not lost when access ends.
If a student expects any of those, the expectation came from your course description, not from the plugin.
Confirm the fix
- Sign in as a test student with access.
- Note the percentage.
- Complete a lesson the way your mode requires.
- Confirm the bar and the number change, in the outline and in My courses.
- Work through the whole course and confirm it reaches 100%.
