Display and layout
How courses and lessons look on the site: what each page shows, what the subheader does, and which settings control it.
In this chapter
| Topic | Article |
|---|---|
| Why there is no course listing page | The course archive |
| The course page | The single course page |
| The lesson page | The single lesson page |
| Featured images | Course thumbnails |
| The banner on courses | Course subheader |
| The banner on lessons | Lesson subheader |
| Overlays and scrolling effects | Background, overlay and parallax |
| Showing who wrote the course | Author information |
| Course and lesson URLs | Custom slugs |
Where the settings live
Settings → POM LMS, in two sections:
| Section | Controls |
|---|---|
| Course | The course page and the course subheader |
| Lesson | The lesson page and the lesson subheader |
Each has the same two groups — the page itself, and its subheader — with identical fields on both sides. Whatever you learn about the course settings applies to lessons.
What POM LMS controls and what the theme controls
POM LMS supplies the templates for course and lesson pages, and the settings above override the theme's defaults for those two post types.
Everything else — colors, typography, the header and footer, the color palette the settings offer you, the button styles — belongs to POM Theme. If a change you want is not in this chapter, it is a theme setting.
Settings are site-wide
There is no per-course display override. Every course page renders with the same visibility, navigation and subheader settings, and every lesson page likewise.
Plan for that: a catalogue that needs two visual treatments needs two theme templates, not two settings profiles.
Start here
If you are setting up display for the first time:
- Decide whether courses get a subheader — see Course subheader.
- Turn off the blog furniture you do not want: date, author link, categories, tags, comments.
- Decide where the progress bar goes.
- Set a featured image on every course.
- Repeat for lessons, where the subheader also prints the course title.
