Course subheader

The subheader is the banner at the top of a course page, showing the course title over a background image.

Overriding the theme

Settings → POM LMS → Course → Course subheader starts with one control:

Override default subheader settings?

Leave it off and course pages use the theme's global subheader settings, like any other post. Turn it on and every other field in this group takes effect — courses get their own treatment, independent of the rest of the site.

Turn it on if courses should look distinct from blog posts. Leave it off if your theme's subheader is already right.

The fields

With the override on:

Setting Options
Enable subheader for this page? Off means no banner at all on courses
Display title Post title or None
Title color From the theme palette
Subheader size Small, Medium, Large, Extra large, Full
Default or custom background Featured image or Custom
Subheader background image The custom image, when Custom is chosen

Overlay and parallax have their own article — see Background, overlay and parallax.

Choosing a size

Size Suits
Small Text-led courses where the content should start immediately
Medium A safe default
Large A catalogue with strong photography
Extra large A flagship course
Full A full-screen banner; students scroll before reading anything

Full is impressive once and tiresome on a course students return to weekly. Prefer Medium or Large for anything used repeatedly.

Featured image gives each course its own banner, which is what most catalogues want. It depends on every course having a good landscape image — see Course thumbnails.

Custom uses one image for every course. Choose it when your courses have no distinct imagery, or when you want the whole catalogue to look like one product.

The title

Display title set to None removes the title from the banner. Do that when the featured image already carries the course name, or when you prefer the title in the page body.

If the banner shows the title, consider turning off the page title in the layout so it does not appear twice.

Title color matters more than it sounds: white on a light photograph is unreadable. Either pick a color that survives your imagery, or add an overlay.

Settings apply to every course

There is no per-course subheader. The only thing that varies course by course is the background, when it comes from the featured image.

Verify

  1. Turn the override on and configure the fields.
  2. Open two courses with different featured images.
  3. Confirm the banner height, the title color and the crop work on both.
  4. Confirm the title does not appear twice.
  5. Check a course with no featured image, and set one if the banner is empty.
  6. Check on a phone, where a Full banner fills the screen.
