Lesson settings
The Lesson section of Settings → POM LMS, controlling every lesson page.
Two groups
| Group | Controls |
|---|---|
| Lesson single | The page: visibility, navigation, progress bar |
| Lesson subheader | The banner, including the course title |
The fields mirror the course section, with one addition and several different sensible answers.
The extra field
Display title — lesson pages can hide their own title, which course pages cannot.
Use it when the subheader already shows the lesson title. Otherwise students read the same words twice at the top of every lesson.
Visibility
| Field | Suggested |
|---|---|
| Display title | Off if the subheader shows it |
| Display featured image | Usually off — the video is the visual |
| Display featured image position | Only if the image is shown |
| Display tags | Off |
| Display author box | Off — the student already knows who teaches |
| Display comments | Your call; see below |
| Display rating | Off |
| Display post date | Off |
| Display post author link | Off |
| Display post categories | Off |
Lessons are the pages students spend their time on. Every element that is not the video, the content or the outline competes with the thing they came for.
Comments on lessons are more useful than comments on courses — questions land next to the material they are about — and more work, because there are many more of them. Enable them only if someone will answer.
Posts navigation
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| Display posts nav | Previous/next between lessons |
| Select prev/next in same category | Restricts them to the same category |
| Posts nav icon | The icon between them |
| Posts nav icon link | Where the icon leads |
Unlike on courses, this navigation is genuinely useful — it is how a student moves through the material without returning to the outline. Leave it on.
Point Posts nav icon link at your catalogue or the account area, so the middle icon is an exit rather than a dead link.
Note that it follows post order, which is not necessarily your section order. The outline is the authoritative map.
Comments and progress
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| Comment button style | The theme button style for the comment form |
| Display progress bar | The bar in the page layout |
| Progress bar position | Top or Bottom |
| Progress bar color | From the theme palette |
Showing the bar on lesson pages is worth it. It moves while students work, which is when the number motivates.
Lesson subheader
Same structure as courses, starting with Override default subheader settings?.
The difference: the lesson subheader also prints the course title below the lesson title, automatically. That single line orients any student who arrives from a bookmark or a search result.
For backgrounds, prefer Custom over Featured image — most sites do not set featured images on lessons, and Featured image then produces an empty banner.
See Lesson subheader.
What is not here
The video, the estimated time, the course and section, the preview flag, the permission override and the no-access text are per lesson, in the lesson editor. See The lesson editor reference.
Verify
- Configure both groups and save.
- Open a lesson in a private window.
- Confirm the title appears exactly once.
- Confirm the course title in the banner is right.
- Confirm previous and next move between lessons.
- Confirm the banner does not push the video below the fold, including on a phone.
