The single lesson page
The lesson page is where students actually learn: video, content, outline, and a way back.
What it shows
- The subheader, if enabled, with the lesson title and the course title beneath it.
- The lesson title, if enabled in the page settings.
- The video, when the lesson has one.
- The lesson content — the editor content.
- The sidebar outline, with the current lesson marked and a link back to the course.
- Optional blog furniture and previous/next navigation.
For a student without access, the video and content are replaced by the login form or the applicable no-access message. See The no-access experience.
A lesson needs a course
A lesson with no course attached does not render — the page returns not found.
This is deliberate: an unattached lesson has no access rules to apply, so showing it would leak content. If a lesson 404s, the first thing to check is its Course field. See Connect a lesson to a course.
Visibility settings
Settings → POM LMS → Lesson → Lesson single, under Visibility. The same fields as the course page, plus one:
| Setting | Notes |
|---|---|
| Display title | Lesson pages can hide the title — useful when the subheader already shows it |
| Display featured image | And its position, before or after the title |
| Display tags, author box, comments, rating, post date, post author link, post categories | As on courses |
Lessons want even less furniture than courses. A date, a category list and an author byline on every lesson clutter the one page students spend their time on.
Display title deserves a decision: with the subheader on, the title appears twice unless you turn one of them off.
Posts navigation
Under Posts navigation, the same four settings as courses — but here previous and next move between lessons, which is exactly what students want.
Leave Display posts nav on for lesson pages. Point Posts nav icon link at your catalogue or account area.
Note that this navigation follows post order, not your section structure, so it can move between sections. The outline remains the authoritative map.
The progress bar
Under Comments and progress, the same three settings — display, position, color — applying to the lesson page.
Showing the bar on lesson pages is worthwhile: it advances as students work, which is the moment the number is most motivating.
Completion
Depending on the site-wide mode, opening the page either marks the lesson complete or leaves it for the student to tick in the outline. See Automatic and manual completion.
Getting back to the course
The outline includes a link back to the course intro, whose wording is set per course — by default ← Go back to course intro. See The back-to-course label.
Verify
- Open a lesson as an administrator.
- Confirm the title appears once, not twice.
- Confirm the video fills the content area and plays.
- Confirm the outline marks the current lesson and offers the back link.
- Confirm previous and next work.
- Sign out and confirm the blocked view is what you intend.
