Lesson subheader

Lesson pages have their own subheader settings, and one thing course subheaders do not: they print the course title.

The course title

Below the lesson title, the lesson subheader shows the title of the course the lesson belongs to.

That is automatic and needs no configuration. It answers the question a student arriving from a bookmark or a search result asks first — what am I looking at? — and it is a good reason to keep lesson subheaders enabled.

The course title comes from the lesson's Course field, so a lesson attached to the wrong course announces the wrong course.

The settings

Settings → POM LMS → Lesson → Lesson subheader, with the same structure as courses:

Setting Options
Override default subheader settings? Off means lessons follow the theme's global settings
Enable subheader for this page? Off means no banner on lessons
Display title Post title or None
Title color From the theme palette
Subheader size Small … Full
Default or custom background Featured image or Custom
Subheader background image The custom image

Overlay and parallax are covered in Background, overlay and parallax.

Configure lessons separately from courses

Course and lesson settings are independent, and they should be: a course page is a shop window, a lesson page is a workspace.

A sensible pairing:

Course Lesson
Subheader Enabled, Large Enabled, Small
Background Featured image Custom, or a plain color
Title Post title Post title, with the page title off

A big banner on every lesson pushes the video below the fold, and students meet it dozens of times.

Backgrounds for lessons

Featured image requires an image on every lesson. Most sites do not set one, and the result is an empty banner.

Custom is usually the better choice for lessons: one image, or a plain branded background, for every lesson on the site. It looks intentional, needs no per-lesson work, and keeps the focus on the video.

Avoid the double title

If the subheader shows the lesson title, turn off Display title in Lesson single → Visibility. Otherwise every lesson shows its name twice, a few centimeters apart.

Turning it off

Setting Enable subheader for this page? off gives lessons no banner at all: the page starts with the content.

That is a legitimate choice for a distraction-free reading experience — but you lose the course title, so put the back-to-course link to work instead. See The back-to-course label.

Verify

  1. Configure the lesson subheader and save.
  2. Open a lesson.
  3. Confirm the lesson title appears once and the course title beneath it is correct.
  4. Confirm the banner does not push the video off the screen.
  5. Open a lesson from a different course and confirm the course title changes.
  6. Check on a phone.
