Lesson video
A lesson can carry one video, shown above its content.
The two fields
Lesson settings → Configuration:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Lesson video type | YouTube, Vimeo, or left empty for any other source |
| Lesson video URL | The video address |
How the video is rendered
The URL decides more than the type field does:
- A YouTube URL is recognized and rendered with the theme's video player, including a thumbnail taken from the video.
- A Vimeo URL is recognized the same way, with its thumbnail retrieved from Vimeo.
- Any other URL is embedded directly in a frame.
Recognition works from the link itself, so a YouTube link pasted with the type left empty is still handled as YouTube.
Add a video
- Publish the video on its platform first, and confirm it can be embedded on other sites.
- Copy its URL from the browser.
- Paste it into Lesson video URL.
- Set Lesson video type to match, or leave it empty for other sources.
- Update the lesson.
- Open the lesson and confirm the player appears and plays.
Before you record thirty of them
Test one lesson end to end first: paste the URL, open the lesson as a student, play the video, and check it on a phone.
Two things fail silently and are much cheaper to discover once:
- Embedding disabled on the video's platform settings, which produces an empty player;
- A private or unlisted video that you can see because you are signed in to the platform and students cannot.
Video and written content
The video is rendered above the lesson content. Use the content for what video is bad at:
- a summary of the key points;
- the exercise or the assignment;
- links, downloads and references;
- a transcript, which also makes the lesson searchable and accessible.
A lesson with a video and nothing else works, but gives students nothing to scan when they return to it.
One video per lesson
The field holds a single URL. For a lesson with several videos, either split it into several lessons — which is usually the better structure — or embed the extra videos in the lesson content using the site's own tools.
Thumbnails
The player shows a poster frame before playback: taken from the video for YouTube, and retrieved from Vimeo for Vimeo videos.
You do not set it in POM LMS. To change it, change the thumbnail on the video platform.
Removing a video
Clear the URL and update. The lesson then renders as content only, which is a normal state — not every lesson needs video.
Verify
- Open the lesson as a student with access.
- Confirm the player renders above the content.
- Play it.
- Confirm the thumbnail is the right frame.
- Check it on a phone — width, controls, and full screen.
- Confirm it plays for a student who is not signed in to the video platform.
