Assign a lesson section
Attached section decides where a lesson appears in the course outline. Without it, the lesson is reachable but invisible.
Where
Lesson settings → Configuration → Attached section.
The list is built from the sections of the course selected in Attached course, so attach the course and save before using it.
What happens without it
The lesson is:
- published;
- reachable at its own URL;
- counted in the course's completion percentage;
- absent from the course outline.
That combination is the reason students report being unable to finish a course: a lesson they cannot see still increases the denominator of their progress.
Find them all at once
The lesson list shows a Section column. A dash means no section.
Scanning that column is the fastest structural audit of a course, and it is worth doing:
- before launching;
- after adding a batch of lessons;
- after deleting or renaming a section;
- when a student reports the percentage will not reach 100%.
When the selector is empty or wrong
Three causes, in order of likelihood:
- The course has no sections. Define them on the course first.
- The course was not saved on this lesson yet, so the selector does not know which sections to offer.
- You changed the attached course and the selector still reflects the previous one — save, then reload the lesson.
Deleting a section breaks its lessons
Removing a section from a course leaves its lessons pointing at something that no longer exists, and they vanish from the outline.
Before deleting a section:
- Note which lessons use it, from the lesson list.
- Reassign them.
- Then delete the section.
Renaming a section is safe; lessons stay assigned.
Section and order are different things
| Field | Decides |
|---|---|
| Attached section | Which group the lesson appears under |
| Order attribute | Its position within that group |
Changing the section moves a lesson between panels; changing the order moves it within one.
Moving a lesson between sections
Change the field and save. The lesson moves in the outline. Its content, URL and the student's completion of it are unaffected.
Check its order value afterwards — a lesson moved into a section keeps whatever order it had, which may place it oddly among its new neighbours.
Verify
- Set the section and save.
- Confirm the lesson list shows it in the Section column.
- Open the course as a student with access.
- Confirm the lesson appears under the right heading, in the right position.
- Confirm the outline's lesson count matches the number of lessons attached to the course.
