Related and neighbouring events

Two different mechanisms move visitors between events: automatic previous/next navigation, and a manual related-content selection.

Previous and next

Every event page carries arrows at the top, left and right of the date block. They move to the neighbouring events in start date order.

Characteristics:

  • automatic — nothing to configure;
  • based on the start date, not on publication order;
  • across the whole programme, not limited to a category;
  • absent at the ends of the programme, where there is no neighbour.

They are how a visitor browses the programme from any event page, and they are the reason a coherent set of start dates matters.

A manual selection, set on the event: Events settings → Event info → Related posts.

It relates posts to the event, and the relation is kept in step from the post side too — POM Events adds an Events tab to the post editor with Related events.

On the event page, the related block renders as cards near the end of the page. Its presentation is controlled site-wide under Settings → POM Events → Single event:

Setting Effect
Related content label The heading, defaulting to Related posts
Display related content excerpt Whether cards show an excerpt
Remove the related item link Leave it unchecked for the block to be rendered

Related events on a post

The other direction is simpler: a post with related events prints a short list of links to them after its content, under a Related events heading.

Posts with no related events selected omit this heading and list.

That is how an article announcing a season links to the individual events in it.

Which to use for what

Goal Mechanism
Browse the programme Previous/next arrows — automatic
Link an event to its announcement article Related content
Link an event to its write-up afterwards Related content
Show every event in a category The search form filtered by category, or the category archive
Show a series of related events to each other Not available — relate them all to one article instead

That last row is the limit worth knowing: the related field on an event selects posts, so events are not related to each other directly. A season page or an article is the natural hub.

Curating the block

  • Two to four items. They render as cards; more becomes a second page.
  • Relate what is genuinely about this event, not everything from the same category.
  • Check the images — cards use the related item's featured image, and an item without one leaves a gap.
  • Prefer durable content. A write-up ages better than a countdown post.

Verify

  1. Open an event and confirm the previous/next arrows move chronologically.
  2. Relate a post to an event and save.
  3. Confirm the block appears on the event with your label.
  4. Open the post and confirm the Related events list appears after its content.
  5. Confirm the cards link through, if that is what you configured.
