Subheader settings
The subheader is the band at the top of an event page: the title, over an image, with the event's categories beneath it.
The settings
Settings → POM Events → Single event:
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Disable subheader | Removes the band entirely |
| Header image | Event featured image or Custom |
| Custom header image | The image used when Custom is selected |
What the band contains
- the event title;
- the event's categories, as links to their archives;
- a background image, from the source chosen above, with an overlay so the text stays legible.
Choosing the image source
Event featured image — each event uses its own. The right choice when your events have individual photography.
Custom — every event uses one image. The right choice when they do not: a consistent branded band is better than a mixture of stock photos and blank spaces.
The choice is site-wide; there is no per-event override.
Disabling the subheader
Turning it off produces a plainer page that starts with the date block and the content. Consider it when:
- events have no imagery worth a full-width band;
- the site's design already carries a header;
- the page should be compact and functional;
- you prefer the title printed in the content column, using Display title.
If you disable the subheader, enable Display title — otherwise the page has no title anywhere.
Choosing a custom header image
It appears behind the title on every event, so:
- wide and simple. It is cropped to a band and overlaid with text;
- nothing important at the edges, which are cropped hardest on a phone;
- quiet enough for text on top;
- generic, since it represents every event on the site;
- uploaded at the size you publish, because nothing is resized for you.
Categories in the subheader
The band prints the event's categories as links. That makes category naming a visible decision — these are words visitors read at the top of the page, not internal labels.
An event with no categories simply shows no category row.
The subheader and the featured image before content
Three settings can each put an image on the page: the subheader, Display featured image before content, and the content itself.
Check a real event with all your settings applied. The common accident is the same photo appearing twice, once as the band and once above the content.
Verify
- Save the section.
- Open an event with a featured image, signed out.
- Confirm the band shows the title, the categories and the image.
- Switch Header image to Custom and confirm every event uses it.
- Disable the subheader and confirm the page still has a title, via Display title.
- Check the band on a phone, where the crop is tightest and the title is most likely to overflow.
