The event introduction

Introductory Text is the lead paragraph printed above the event's main content, styled larger than the body text.

Where

Events settings → Event info → Introductory Text.

It is a plain textarea. Line breaks are preserved when it is printed, so a short two-line introduction keeps its shape.

What belongs in it

The one paragraph a visitor should read if they read nothing else:

  • what the event is;
  • who it is for;
  • the single most important practical fact — doors at 19:00, free entry, registration required, limited places.

What does not belong in it

  • The full description. That is the editor content.
  • The date, place, organizer or telephone. Those are already printed in the details sidebar, and repeating them creates two versions to keep in step.
  • Formatting. It is a plain text field; write it as prose.
  • Links. There is no markup here. Use the content, or an additional link button.

Length

Two to four lines. It is set larger than the body text, so a long introduction becomes a wall before the reader reaches the content.

If you need more, it belongs in the content.

Writing that works

Compare:

We are pleased to invite you to an event that will take place in our facilities and in which various topics of interest will be addressed.

with:

A practical afternoon on soil health for small growers. Four short talks, a field walk and time to ask questions. Bring boots.

The second one tells a visitor whether it is for them. The first could describe anything.

Consistency across events

The introduction is where a site's voice is most visible, because it appears at the top of every event page. Agree the pattern once:

  • always present, or only when it adds something;
  • second person or third;
  • a promise, a summary, or a practical note.

A calendar where half the events open with a lead and half start cold reads as unfinished.

When to leave it empty

When the title and the content already do the job — a short, self-explanatory event. An empty introduction is not rendered, so nothing looks missing.

Verify

  1. Save and open the event signed out.
  2. Confirm the text appears above the content, in the lead style.
  3. Confirm line breaks are where you intended.
  4. Confirm it does not repeat the sidebar facts.
  5. Read it on a phone, where a long lead is most punishing.
