Related content settings

Three settings control the related-content block at the end of an event page.

The settings

Settings → POM Events → Single event:

Setting Effect
Related content label The heading above the block. Defaults to Related posts
Display related content excerpt Whether each card shows an excerpt
Remove the related item link Whether the cards link through to the item

Worth stating plainly, because it is the setting people trip over: the related block is rendered on the event page when Remove the related item link is left unchecked.

Enabling that option means the block is not printed. Treat it as the switch that turns the whole block off, and use it deliberately.

The block shows the posts selected on the event, in Events settings → Event info → Related posts. The relation is kept in step from the post side too, where POM Events adds an Events tab with Related events.

See Related content.

The label

Defaults to Related posts, which is accurate and dull. Choose wording that describes how you actually use the block:

Label Suits
Read more about this Announcement and background articles
Before and after Programme notes plus write-ups
In the press Coverage
Related posts Mixed use

It is site-wide, so pick one that covers every event.

The excerpt

Enabling it prints each related item's excerpt on its card.

  • On — more context, taller cards, a longer page.
  • Off — a compact strip of images and titles.

If your posts have well-written excerpts, turning it on helps. If they do not, the excerpts will be truncated content and it is better off.

Card images

The cards use each related item's featured image. An item without one leaves a visible gap, so relate content that has images — or accept the gap.

How many to relate

Two to four. They render as cards across the page; six becomes a second row and a longer page for diminishing returns.

Consistency

Because the settings are site-wide but the relations are per event, the block can look very different from event to event: three cards with excerpts on one, one card without an image on another.

Agree a convention — how many, what kind, always with images — and apply it as part of publishing an event.

Verify

  1. Relate two posts to an event and save.
  2. Confirm the block appears with your label.
  3. Toggle the excerpt setting and confirm the cards change.
  4. Confirm the cards link through, if that is what you want.
  5. Enable Remove the related item link and confirm the block is no longer printed — then set it back.
  6. Check the block on a phone, where cards stack.
