Search form options

[web_event_search_form] accepts three attributes, and takes the rest of its behavior from the Archive settings.

The attributes

Attribute Values Effect
hide_calendar yes Hides the filter column, including the date picker, and lets the results use the full width
error_msg Any text The message shown when a calendar month has no events
el_class A CSS class An extra class on the container, for styling

Example:

[web_event_search_form hide_calendar="yes" error_msg="No events this month"]

The same options are available as fields on the page-builder element, so you rarely need to type the shortcode by hand.

hide_calendar

Setting it to yes removes the whole left column — the date picker and the type and category filters — and gives the results the full page width.

Use it when you want a plain chronological list of upcoming events with no filtering. See Hide the search calendar for when that is the right choice.

error_msg

The text shown when a chosen calendar month contains no events. Left unset, the default explains that there are no events for the chosen month.

Write it in the site's voice, and keep it useful:

Nothing scheduled this month — try another, or see the full programme.

This is different from the message shown when a filtered search returns nothing, which comes from the Archive settings. See Empty results and error messages.

el_class

An extra class on the container so a theme or a custom stylesheet can target this instance. Useful when the same shortcode appears on two pages with different presentation.

What is configured elsewhere

Behavior Where
How many events per page Archive → Posts per page
The loading image Archive → Events list loader
The image for events with no featured image Archive → Events thumbnail placeholder
The no-results message for filtered searches Archive → Error message
Whether list items show dates Archive → Hide events date

Those apply to every event list on the site, not to one shortcode instance.

What cannot be configured

The shortcode does not accept attributes for:

  • which taxonomies are offered as filters;
  • the ordering;
  • including past events;
  • limiting the list to one category or type;
  • the layout of a result item.

Those are fixed by the plugin. For a list restricted to one category, link the category archive instead, or have a developer adjust the search configuration through the supported filter — see Shortcodes.

Using it twice on one page

Possible, and rarely a good idea: two instances share the same results area conventions and will compete for the visitor's attention.

If you need two distinct listings, use two pages.

Verify

  1. Place the shortcode with no attributes and confirm the default layout.
  2. Add hide_calendar="yes" and confirm the filter column disappears and the results widen.
  3. Set error_msg and confirm it appears for a month with no events.
  4. Add el_class and confirm the class reaches the container.
  5. Check both variants on a phone.
