The event search form
[web_event_search_form] is the main way visitors browse events: a date picker and filters on one side, results on the other, updating without reloading the page.
Place it
- Create or open the page that will be your events page.
- Insert the shortcode
[web_event_search_form], or its page-builder element. - Publish.
- Add the page to the site navigation.
That page is now the site's events listing. Nothing appears automatically without it.
What visitors get
On the left, the filter column:
- a date picker highlighting the days that have events;
- Filter by type — checkboxes for the event types, with an All option;
- Filter by category — the same for categories.
On the right, the results: event items with their image, title, date, place, organizer, terms and excerpt, followed by a Load more events button when there are more.
How the results behave
- Filters apply automatically — there is no submit button.
- Results are replaced without reloading the page.
- The list shows events whose end date is today or later, ordered by start date ascending.
- The number of events per page comes from Settings → POM Events → Archive → Posts per page, which defaults to 12.
- Load more events appends the next page.
- A configured loader image is shown while results load.
The date picker
The picker highlights days on which events occur, so a visitor sees at a glance where the programme is dense.
Choosing a date filters to the events running on that day — those that start on or before it and end on or after it. A three-day event is therefore found on all three of its days.
The filters
Both filters are checkbox lists built from the taxonomy terms, with child terms indented under their parents. Selecting a parent includes its children.
They only work if your events are classified. An unassigned event is invisible to every filter, so assigning types and categories has to be part of publishing an event.
Empty terms still appear in the filter list, so review your terms periodically or visitors will be offered choices that return nothing.
What it shows and what it hides
| Shown | Hidden |
|---|---|
| Published events | Drafts, private and scheduled events |
| Events ending today or later | Events that have finished |
| All types and categories, unless filtered | — |
Where to put it
One page, in the main navigation, named the way visitors think — Events, What's on, Programme.
If you also use the calendar shortcode, put it on the same page below the search form, or on its own page. Both on the same page duplicates a lot of information.
Verify
- Open the page signed out.
- Confirm the results list your upcoming events, oldest first.
- Filter by a type and confirm the results narrow.
- Filter by a category and confirm the same.
- Pick a date with an event and confirm the results.
- Confirm Load more events appears when you have more events than the page size, and that it works.
- Confirm a finished event is absent.
- Check the whole thing on a phone.
