Build a resource library

A resource library works best when editorial metadata is consistent enough to answer questions such as topic, format, audience, and publication date.

Prepare the taxonomy

Model high-value reusable classifications—topic, format, and audience—as taxonomies. Use clear singular concepts and avoid duplicate terms such as “Guide” and “Guides.”

If the result card shows a custom value such as reading time or an external file label, add that key under Indexed metas. Do not turn descriptive body text into a choice facet.

Create a search-focused context

  1. Choose the resource post type archive or a custom query that excludes non-library content.
  2. Add one Search facet with an instructional Placeholder.
  3. Add Checkboxes for a small topic or format set.
  4. Use Searchable select for a large audience or subject vocabulary.
  5. Add Date range only when visitors genuinely search by publication interval.
  6. Save, then run Reindex context.

Only one Search facet is allowed. Use native WordPress search instead when the keyword must search the whole site before reaching the library.

Design the result experience

Show format and topic on each card so visitors understand why it matched. Add Faceted Search Counts, Faceted Search Selections, and Faceted Search Reset.

Choose Automatic submit mode for a small set of fast choice facets. Choose Manual when the library has several detailed filters and visitors are likely to set them together.

Sorting options commonly include date_desc, date_asc, title_asc, and title_desc. A page-size selector is optional; a predictable default is often enough.

Verify editorial edge cases

Test resources with several topics, missing optional card data, an old publication date, a long title, and terms containing accents. Confirm keyword-only search, cross-taxonomy combinations, date boundaries, empty results, reset, and shareable URLs.
