Create a custom taxonomy

A custom taxonomy gives editors a shared hierarchical vocabulary and gives visitors optional term archives. POM Theme taxonomies support parent and child terms regardless of whether their public URLs include the complete hierarchy.

Create the taxonomy

  1. Create and save the target post type first.
  2. Open Settings → POM Theme → Content model → Taxonomies.
  3. In Custom taxonomies, choose Add taxonomy.
  4. Enter a lowercase Slug without spaces or special characters.
  5. Enter Singular name and Plural name.
  6. In Enabled post types, select every collection that should use this vocabulary.
  7. Enable Disable archive for this taxonomy only when terms should not have public archive pages.
  8. Enable Enable hierarchical URLs when a child term URL should contain every parent-term slug.
  9. Save the settings.

POM Theme registers these taxonomies as hierarchical, exposes them to the WordPress REST API, and adds a taxonomy column to connected post-type lists. Enable hierarchical URLs changes the rewrite path; it does not enable or disable parent terms.

Translate taxonomy names with Polylang

With Polylang active, saved Singular name and Plural name values are available under Languages → Translations, in the POM group.

  1. Save the original names under Settings → POM Theme → Content model → Taxonomies.
  2. Open Languages → Translations and search for each original name.
  3. Enter the translation for each language, then choose Save Changes.
  4. Open a term archive in each language and check the taxonomy label where it appears in navigation.

These strings describe the taxonomy itself. Translate individual terms through their taxonomy editor. Translating a label does not change the taxonomy identifier, archive base, or existing URLs.

Configure the taxonomy base

Open Settings → Permalinks and find Custom taxonomies. The “Plural label” Custom slug field controls the normal public archive base.

For example, a taxonomy with base specialties can produce:

/specialties/design/

With hierarchical URLs enabled, a child term can produce:

/specialties/design/product-design/

Save the permalink screen after changing the base.

Populate and verify the vocabulary

  1. Open the connected post type.
  2. Create a parent term and a child term.
  3. Assign the child term to a published entry.
  4. Confirm the taxonomy column appears in the content list.
  5. Open both term archive URLs when archives are enabled.
  6. Confirm parent-term segments appear only when Enable hierarchical URLs is active.
  7. Confirm the taxonomy is available on every selected post type and absent from unselected types.

If the taxonomy is missing from an editor, confirm the post type was saved before it was selected under Enabled post types, then save the taxonomy again.

Continue with Connect post types and taxonomies for template and URL decisions.
