Create a custom post type
A custom post type creates a separate WordPress content collection with its own administration menu, labels, supported editor features, and optional public routes.
Prepare the identifiers
Choose:
- A stable lowercase Post type slug without spaces or special characters
- A customer-facing Singular name
- A customer-facing Plural
- An optional Dashicon slug for Icon
Do not reuse post, page, course, lesson, product, or another registered post type slug. Changing the machine slug later creates a different content type rather than renaming the existing records.
Register the collection
- Open Settings → POM Theme → Content model → Post Types.
- In Custom Post types, choose Add post type.
- Enter the slug and labels.
- Choose Single layout:
- Simple layout uses the theme’s standard single-content flow.
- Use with Visual Composer uses page-style content rendering.
- Saved custom single templates appear as Custom – template name options.
- Enable Enable single page when entries need public single URLs and navigation-menu availability.
- Enable Enable archive when the collection needs a public archive.
- Set Exclude from search according to whether native WordPress search should include the entries.
- Enable only the editor features required: thumbnail, authors, excerpt, comments, or content.
- Save the POM Theme settings.
Every POM-created post type supports a title and page-order attributes. POM-created post types use a flat entry structure; use a hierarchical taxonomy when entries need durable parent-and-child organization.
Leave Enable single page disabled for collections that only appear inside other pages, such as committee members or testimonials. Their published entries can still appear through saved queries in Listings, Carousel Feed, A–Z Feed and Finder. The setting controls individual public routes; it does not exclude the collection from those results. Publication, password protection and permission rules still apply.
Configure the public base
After saving:
- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Find Custom post types.
- Review the “Plural label” Custom slug field.
- Save the permalink screen.
The stored custom slug becomes the rewrite base; the post type’s machine slug remains its internal identity.
Add a representative entry
Create one entry from the new administration menu. Populate every enabled editor feature, publish it, and verify:
- The single URL when Enable single page is active
- The archive when Enable archive is active
- Search inclusion or exclusion
- The selected single layout
- The post type’s dynamic settings under the POM Theme Templates area
If a route returns 404 immediately after setup, save Settings → Permalinks again and retest. Next, create a taxonomy or add fields.
