Write WooCommerce category descriptions
Use this tool to write or refresh product-category descriptions in a consistent voice. It updates the category's standard WooCommerce description, not a custom field or a separate SEO plugin field.
Before you start
WooCommerce must be active. Enable AI category descriptions under Settings → POM AI → AI Tools, then open Products → AI category descriptions. You need permission to edit product categories and a valid POM AI service license with available credits.
Reload the administration page after enabling the tool. Multisite super administrators use the Products menu in the individual site's dashboard. If your site grants you access to the AI catalog tools without the regular catalog permissions, use Tools → AI category descriptions instead.
Complete your business profile first. Its relevant writing context is copied when you prepare a batch. Existing descriptions and category ancestry also provide context. Do not include confidential information that should not be sent to the AI service.
The tool updates existing category descriptions, including those visible in your shop. Take a backup and review the selection before generating.
Select categories and prepare instructions
- Choose Model: Basic for a balance of speed and cost, Pro for additional reasoning, or Pro + internet to research each category before writing. Review the returned source links; research does not guarantee factual accuracy.
- Choose Existing descriptions:
- Replace text replaces the current description.
- Append places generated copy after the existing description.
- Prepend places generated copy before the existing description.
- Set Description word target. The recommendation is 300 words; the range is 100–2,000. This applies to newly generated copy, not the combined existing and generated text.
- Enter a Shared brief, preferably in Markdown. You can use up to 90,000 characters in addition to the saved business context.
- Use Search by name and Search, or leave the search empty to browse all categories, including empty categories. Load more reveals the next group of up to 50.
- Check individual categories, use Select displayed items, or choose Select all matching to include matching categories that are not loaded on screen. With an empty search, the latter selects the whole editable category catalog. Uncheck individual rows to exclude them.
- Expand Refine prompt for this item for any category needing special guidance. Its additional instructions are appended to the shared brief and may contain up to 10,000 characters.
For example, a category-specific brief might say:
Help first-time buyers choose between the materials described in our catalog. Explain the practical differences using only verified facts. Address maintenance and intended use, avoid unsupported durability claims, and finish with an invitation to compare the available products. Do not invent prices or warranties.
Selections and prompts are not saved until the next step. Changing the search clears a previous Select all matching selection; explicit selections remain selected across searches.
Generate and review
- Click Prepare batch. This saves the configuration and prepares the next item without an AI charge. The configuration is then fixed for that batch.
- Optionally click Estimate next item. The estimate covers pending research and writing for that item only, not every remaining category.
- Click Start / resume and confirm. This authorizes generation and application for all remaining selected items, with a separate request for each stage.
- Watch the current item, completed/skipped counters and credits used. Pause after this step lets the in-flight request finish before stopping. It may still consume credits.
- Use Open editor in the results to review each updated description and check its appearance in your shop. Category formatting depends on WordPress's permitted HTML and the active theme.
You can leave the screen and return later. Each user has a separate category batch on each site. Returning does not automatically start paid requests. The screen retains the latest 100 result entries, while the counters include the whole batch.
Skip current item leaves its description unchanged and continues past it. Already consumed research or generation credits are not refunded. Clear batch forgets the saved batch but does not undo descriptions already applied.
Limits and troubleshooting
- Individually selected IDs and exclusions are limited to 5,000 each. Select all matching processes larger catalogs progressively. Additional per-item briefs may total up to 1 MB per batch.
- Avoid editing, moving or renaming selected categories during a run. If the current description changes while text is being generated, the tool stops without overwriting it. Skip that item and prepare a new batch if you want to use its updated content.
- Categories created after the batch was prepared are not added to that batch. Changes to catalog names can affect pending search matches.
- If a request fails, reload and resume the saved batch. Confirmed paid results can be recovered without generating them again; append/prepend operations are not intentionally repeated on resume.
- If WooCommerce is deactivated, the activation controls and tools are unavailable until it is active again.
